The Shack, by William P. Young

2009 - 23:21

The ShackI’ve just finished reading The Shack, by William P. Young. I was at Way of Grace (São Paulo Station) two weeks ago and I heard some guy recommending this book to a family. I got interested with that talking and decided to read it. After googling a little bit on the book’s subject I got intrigued and decided to buy it.

It’s a book that calls reader’s attention since the beggining and, through its pages, it causes some discomfort, mainly for those who were born and raised within a church, such as… me (lol). Despite of that discomfort that stayed by my side through the whole history, I decided to keep on reading. Some of the things that most bothered me were those faces, profiles, sense of humor, clothes and gender (!) that the author gave to the Trinity. C’mon!

But, as we say in Brazil, “if you’re in the rain you must get wet”. I had to know what was the purpose of that book. I was trying to follow 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (”but test everything; hold fast what is good”). And that’s what I decided to do. When I was reading the first chapters I received a new RSS post from Caio Fábio and, coincidentally, there he answered to a letter asking for his opinion on this book. Despite not reading the book, he made several good points that helped me release the bolting I created in my mind.

I kept on reading and figured out what was its purpose: to show to the world that God is a present God, that we were made on His image, that he laughs, he cries and cares about His sons. The author shows that in spite of all world disgraces, his Grace is always superabundant.

That’s what I caught from it but I know there will be many different opinions. I can’t deny it’s controversial.
